Overview of the PS3 console and the dreaded YLOD problem
The PS3 encompasses the very best of hardware and software to be a seriously cutting edge console. But with all this high-tech electronics, comes the higher risk of the console developing problems, and big problems at that.
What is frustrating is that SONY had the upper hand on this problem, and totally dropped the ball. On release and from a glitch/failure rate point of view, the console from SONY was believed to have the exceptional failure rate of just under 1%. Unfortunately SONY’s track record for such information can be imaginative at the best of times, and this unfortunately applied to the PS3.
Owners were soon experiencing the damaging and annoying problem of the console overheating. Specifically the ylod (yellow light of death), the rlod (red light of death), games freezing, the console restarting or dying completely and movies being interrupted. It was a lesson that SONY should have learned from the XBOX and its RROD problem, but alas it wasn’t to be the case.
But this isn’t about console failures in general, nor is it about the short-sightedness of both M$ and SONY, you’re here for one thing and one thing only, you’re here to fix YLOD on your PS3, so I will stop my rambling, and we can continue.
Sound good? Great!
This is how to detect PS3 YLOD
Upon starting you PS3 console, the green light will illuminate which is shortly followed by the ylod (yellow light of death). The ylod is easily recognisable when it happens, as the image below shows.
Why does the YLOD problem happen?
The ylod (yellow light of death) happens when the system overheats, causing damage to some of the components inside your prized console. It is a general hardware failure, the hardware being the PS3 console, and the failure being, well…it doesn’t work properly (SONY are as good as Microsoft with their failure explanations).
The high-tech wizardry going on inside you PS3 means that the components (motherboard, CPU, RAM, GPU etc) can reach VERY high temperatures when your using the console. Some factors such as poor ventilation or air quality (smoke for example) can cause it to overheat. Excessive use of the console can also make it prone to overheating, so even if you can handle extensive game-playing sessions, it’s sensible to take breaks for your poor consoles sake now and then.
The main culprits hardware wise in the console are the motherboard, the CPU (the PS3 brain), and the GPU (drives the graphics you see on screen). If any of these reach too high a temperature, the solder that holds them altogether simply melts. This causes a disconnected between the motherboard + CPU or motherboard + GPU and causes…you guessed it! – The YLOD problem. This is the#1 reason for a ylod issue, it’s as simple as that
How to fix the ylod problem?
